Short Bio

  • Florian Hoof is Visiting Professor for “Media History and Communication Theory” from April to September 2023. He is on leave from the Goethe University Frankfurt, where he is Associate Lecturer in Media Studies and Post-Doc Researcher in the research initiative “ConTrust – Trust in Conflict” at the Cluster of Excellence “Normative Orders”. He is currently working on a project on digital trust and conflict. 
  • He was Guest Professor at the Department of Film and Media Studies, Università Cattolica, Milano, at the Department of History of Technology, ETH Zurich, and held a temporary position as W3 Professor for Media Systems and Organization at the University of Paderborn. He was also Scientist in Residence at: University of Sydney Business School, University of California, Irvine, and University of New South Wales. Previously, he held academic positions at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Center for Advanced Studies Media Cultures of Computer Simulation, Goethe University Frankfurt, Department of Theater, Film and Media Studies, and Ruhr University Bochum, Department of Media Studies. He studied Media and Cultural Studies, Sociology, Political Science and International Relations in Germany and Australia, and received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation for both his undergraduate and graduate studies. 
  • His research interests include Digital Cultures and Infrastructures, Social Theory, Distribution and Media Industry Studies, History of Science and Non-Theatrical Film. He is the author of Angels of Efficiency. A Media History of Consulting (Oxford University Press, New York 2020), which received the Geisteswissenschaften International translation grant from the Börsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels. His book “Alternative Sports and Media Distribution – Infrastructures and the Circulation of Moving Images” is forthcoming with Palgrave Macmillian, London 2023.
