This course will deal with the development of modern American photography and film, exploring their roots and flowering, from approximately 1900-1970. The emergence of photography and film as Fine Arts, as well as their roles in documentation and photojournalism will be explored, along with the role of American photography and film on a larger “global stage.” Issues of individual and cultural identities will be considered, along with depictions of rural and urban imagery, as well as experiments in technique, format, and exhibition practices. Some comparison with works in other art forms will also be made. The class will include lecture and discussion, a paper, the presentation of a photography project, and final exam.

Course Requirements: regular attendance, active participation and preparation, written assignment (6-8 pages, to be handed in during class), short presentation of photography project, final test.
